Interview with Alyson Jones

Please share a bit about your journey to become a published author?

I first began my work to work with Julie Salisbury of Influence Publishing at an author’s retreat which was held over three days at Bowen Island.  Julie was an amazing facilitator who assisted me in getting grounded enough to truly begin my writing process. Prior to the retreat I had many book ideas bouncing around in my head, but had never committed to any particular path. During the retreat I was able to bring my ideas together, and even more importantly I was able to remove myself from distractions so I could truly focus and begin to map out the foundation for my book.

I left the weekend with a clear direction for my book, and all of my chapters outlined. I then worked closely with Julie to keep the process moving. We set a structured time frame and realistic goals. It was exciting to experience the progress week by week and see my book growing. As I have a busy career and many commitments, I was in danger of getting lost on the trail – but Julie kept me moving forwards by providing practical structure, sound advice and inspirational moments of motivation when I needed them. Within a year my book was completed, fully edited and published. I published my book on my 50th birthday and it is still one of proudest accomplishments.

How does the writing process work for you? Do you schedule a time every day, work madly when inspiration hits or ?

I have found what works best for me is to schedule a consistent time – and just write during that time.  I don’t wait for inspiration and I try not to worry about whether my writing is good or not – I just sit down at my computer and write.  Dedicating one day, or one morning a week is the key for me.

What did you find most difficult about the writing and publishing process? What was the easiest?

The most difficult part of writing and publishing for me was the time crunch – it was a challenge to balance my writing commitment with my other commitments. Surprisingly the easiest part was the writing! Once I released myself from having to worry about whether my writing was good or not, I found out that I could get into a productive flow.  I quite enjoy the writing process itself – it is rather zen like for me. I focus, relax and write!

The MORE Philosophy is a life strategy that is accessible, doable and, above all else, practical. Using the steps of the MORE philosophy, this book will lead you on a path that digs deeper into your life. What would you like readers to know about you?

I am a therapist, educator and writer who has practised a no-nonsense approach to an exceptional life, and wrote a book that outlines the philosophy behind this approach to life. I tend to dig in, and dig in deep. I don’t believe in doing things half way. I have brought this philosophy to the large private counselling centre, Alyson Jones & Associates (alysonjones.ca) where I lead a professional team of therapists who are committed to providing MORE outstanding services to a wide range of clients.

I have a Masters in Counselling Psychology and have practiced as a professional therapist for over 25 years, working with all age groups. I am also an Adjunct Professor at the Adler University in Vancouver, B.C., where I enjoy working with grad students who are entering the psychology field. I am fortunate to also have the opportunity to appear regularly on CTV Morning Live, and to be a contributing writer to the Huffington Post Canada.

My work as clinical director, counsellor, public speaker, parent educator, court expert, teacher and author has led me to some interesting experiences and insights that I am excited to share with others. I believe in going big and going home so in addition to my professional life, I live in North Vancouver with my exceptional family where I enjoy being a wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend.

Do you have any new books in the planning or writing stage?

I have a couple other book ideas that are brewing in my mind, but it is time to do another retreat with Julie so I can nail down the structure to get my next book written.

If there was one line, quote or thought you would like people to know form your book what would it be?

“In allowing, MORE always happens.”
